An early look at Round 1

It is only 7 more sleeps until the ball bounces for the first time in season 2018 on the hallowed turf of the MCG. So now is a good time to take an early look at Round 1.

A record crowd in excess of 90,000 will be on hand to watch Richmond raise their premiership flag for the first time in 37 years as they face bitter rivals to kick off the season.

All eyes will be on their superstar Dustin Martin, who became the first player in history to win a Brownlow Medal, Norm Smith and Premiership in the same season last year.

Richmond ($1.18) are odds on to get the job done against Carlton ($4.95) in early betting markets, it appears the only question will be by what margin. This will be a good chance for Martin to open his 2018 Brownlow Medal vote tally.

On Friday night Essendon ($2.05) will host premiership favourites Adelaide ($1.78). The Bombers recruited well in the off season, but so too did the Crows, adding former Blues star and number #1 draft pick Bryce Gibbs to their already star-studded midfield.

Saturday looks a ripper of a day of footy action with four great games. The early game sees St Kilda ($1.29) start favourites against the Brisbane Lions ($3.65). An hour later Port Adelaide ($1.29) tajes on Fremantle ($3.65) at Adelaide Oval.

In the evening there are two matches that could go either way. Hawthorn ($1.85) will take on Collingwood ($1.96) in a ripper, while Gold Coast ($1.85) welcomes North Melbourne ($1.96) to Queensland.

The GWS Giants ($1.45) have underachieved over the past two seasons, but come into 2018 as one of the premiership fancies. They start favourites over 2016 premiers Western Bulldogs ($2.75) on Sunday in what should be an exciting match.

Gary Ablett will don a Geelong jersey for the first time since 2010 as Geelong ($1.81) kick off their campaign against an exciting young Melbourne ($2.00) team.

Round 1 comes to a close on Sunday evening as bitter rivals West Coast ($2.90) and Sydney ($1.42) resume their rivalry at the brand new Perth Stadium.

Round 1 - Best Bets

Round 1 looks to be an absolute corker with several matches that cannot be missed. There is also some good value to be had as well.

The value looks with Hawthorn, Geelong and West Coast who are at generous odds.

West Coast are playing their first ever match at the new Perth Stadium and will have added motivation to get the job done. At $2.90 they are absolutely worth a crack.

Geelong already boasted the best midfield in the competition with Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood. They have now added Gary Ablett. Scary! Take the $1.81 on offer.

And lastly, the Pies look set for another ordinary year, especially with Tyson Goldsack finding out a week before the season he has done an ACL. The Hawks finished off last season very nicely, just missing the finals after a poor first half to the year.

Take the odds of $1.85 on offer, as that appears very generous if you ask us.

  • West Coast @ $2.90
  • Geelong @ $1.81
  • Hawthorn @ $1.85
